Newaza (Ground Techniques)

At Judo Matsu, ne-waza is treated as a core pillar of judo training rather than a separate skill set. This class develops strong, reliable ground techniques that connect directly to standing judo, with a focus on control, transitions, and decision-making under pressure.

A Judo-Specific Ground Game

This class focuses on judo ground techniques built on strong foundational movement patterns. Training emphasises control, balance, and efficiency on the ground, with particular attention to pinning, escaping pins and maintaining dominant positions.

Unlike Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the approach prioritises position over submission. Students learn how to establish and maintain dominant positions, remain composed under pressure, and make smart decisions on the ground rather than chasing low-percentage finishes.

How the Class Is Taught

Newaza training is delivered through guided instruction, structured drilling, and live sparring. This allows students to build technical understanding while applying techniques in realistic situations. Sessions are carefully structured to support consistent improvement without unnecessary complexity.

Each class includes specific warm-ups and body-strengthening drills, technique demonstration, drilling, and randori (sparring) to finish.

Who This Class Is For

This class is suitable for all judoka, regardless of experience level, and forms an essential part of complete judo training. It is also well suited to practitioners from other grappling backgrounds, such as BJJ, who want to develop a judo-specific ground game with an emphasis on positional control, pinning, and a more top-dominant approach.

Building Ne-Waza From Throws

A key focus of the program is the transition from throwing to ground fighting. Students learn how to immediately establish control and build a ground game directly from throws and takedowns, reflecting real judo scenarios rather than isolated ground exchanges.

This program provides a clear pathway for developing effective, reliable newaza as part of complete judo training.
